Day 3

Second day of trekking

After breakfast, we continue our trek, navigating a slightly more challenging trail with some steep descents. Our destination is Wamerek, a traditional Dani settlement with homes and gardens perched on mountain slopes. Surrounded by natural stone walls, the round, grass-roofed huts offer a glimpse into the past. Depending on our pace, we arrive in Wamerek for lunch. Here, we camp on a grassy area beside a small river, with our team setting up shelter in local huts for cooking or protection from rain. After a refreshing swim, there’s time to explore the village and learn about the daily lives of the Dani people.

Trekking: 5-6 hours.

Day 4

Panorama over the Baliem River

On the third day of trekking in the Baliem Valley, we begin with a steady climb to Tangma village. This village features a small airstrip surrounded by houses, though only small planes can land on the grassy strip, and air traffic is minimal. After a short break, we continue trekking uphill, stopping for a shaded lunch break along the trail. Refreshed, we resume the journey, eventually reaching a ridge with breathtaking views of the Baliem River and even distant Wamena. After taking time to enjoy the scenery, we head to a nearby settlement for the night, camping on a grassy field in front of a church. Dinner is served in a local home.

Trekking: 5-6 hours.

Day 5

Last day of trekking

We leave Tangma and traverse the valley, eventually crossing the Baliem River. Without a bridge, crossing can take time, especially if water levels are high. The trail leads us through mountain forests, which can be muddy in sections. Gradually, we descend and begin to see more Dani farmlands, primarily sweet potatoes, but also corn, cassava, and exotic plants like ginger. We rejoin the paved road at our starting point, where a vehicle awaits to take us back to the resort for lunch.

Trekking: 3-4 hours. Transportation: 2-hour drive.
