Spot 1
Victoria Crown Pigeon
The Victoria Crowned Pigeon is one of Papua’s most iconic birds and a dream species for birdwatchers. Known as the largest and one of the most beautiful pigeons on Earth, it is endemic to the lowland forests of New Guinea and cannot be found anywhere else in the wild. Because of its limited distribution and the effort required to reach its habitat, it has become a top target species for birdwatching tours in Papua and one of the highlights of any New Guinea birding expedition. The journey begins at around 3:30 AM with a 20-minute drive to the forest entrance. Upon arrival at Akrua Indigenous Forest, you will walk quietly through the forest in search of the Victoria Crowned Pigeon. The male bird is most commonly seen before returning to the lodge. The entire tour takes approximately 8 hours.
