Nimbokrang Lowland Birdwatching

This 5-day birdwatching expedition takes you deep into the lowland rainforests of Nimbokrang, one of Papua’s most celebrated birding destinations. Located in the Grime Valley at the foothills of the Cyclops Mountains, Nimbokrang has been a favorite among birders for over 20 years.

The journey focuses on finding Papua’s most iconic species, including several Birds-of-Paradise, the majestic Victoria Crowned Pigeon, Northern Cassowary, Magnificent Riflebird, and Red-legged Brush Turkey. Expect early starts, forest trekking, and unforgettable wildlife encounters.

Day 5

Transfer to Airport / Sentani

20-minute walk to the first Bird-of-Paradise spot.
Treeking level: Moderate.
Twelve-wired, Lesser, King Birds-of-paradise, Pale -billed Sicklebill, Salvadori’s Fig-Parrot, Brown and Black-capped Lories, Lowland Peltops, Buff-faced Pygmy Parrot, Blue Jewelbabbler, White-eared Catbird, Brown-headed Crow, Jobi Manucode, Victoria Crowned Pigeon, Collared Brushturkey, Shovel-billed Kookaburra, Papuan Frogmouth, Ochre-collared Monarch, Grand Munia, Golden Myna, Papuan Nightja, Palm Cockatoo, Papuan Pitta, Eastern Papuan Pitta.

Detail Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Nimbokrang

Arrive at Sentani Airport (DJJ) in Jayapura and transfer by road to Nimbokrang, located in the lowland forests at the base of the Cyclops Mountains. If time permits, enjoy a short birding session near town en route to the lodge. Relax or afternoon birding after long journey.

Day 2

Full day tour in Nimbokrang

An early morning start to search for the impressive Victoria Crowned Pigeon. This excursion requires good stamina as we walk through swampy forest areas to reach the bird’s display grounds. The same forest is also home to the elusive Northern Cassowary, and with luck, we may encounter it during our walk. Return to the lodge in the afternoon.

Day 3

Full day tour in Nimbokrang

Today focuses on spotting 3–4 species of Birds-of-Paradise found in the Nimbokrang forest. We start early to reach active display sites. On the return walk, we stop at one of the highest forest hills, offering excellent views of birds flying across the canopy.

Day 4

Full day tour in Nimbokrang

Another early departure to search for the stunning Magnificent Riflebird. This trek involves rocky forest terrain and requires moderate fitness. The area is also home to Red-legged Brush Turkey, which we may encounter along the trail. Afternoon at leisure after returning to the lodge.
